Jerry, You are right so far.
The answer is GOODDEN, which is a form of salutation.

Can' really explain the clue, though. Thanks for your help in the past

The clue has come to me now. O for love; ODD for unusual; all in GEN - short for Genesis - the firstbook of the Bible.

Jerry,

SIND is the word you are looking for.

I think 27d is

TOGO (Country) "TO GO" = remaining.

28d may well be

HOLD (HOL[iday])+D (("BOOZE" = a hold or prison)

Any thoughts on 29a, 23d, 19d or 25a, please ????

That's a pity; SIND is incorrect and does not conform (much) to the clue's logic.
SIN=wrong; OK - D=day; OK, but "washing down with booze"? The criteria for proof in this last component are not satisfied, therefore the posited light is unsound. Sorry.
