Thanks everybody. I still can't see how FAKERY fits the clue. I have only recently started doing the Saturday Times cryptic, and am finding the setters minds a tad difficult to read !

Perhaps the A is wrong.

Just seen an answer in Another Place....HERESY, so my A must be wrong apparently !...just seen it...TATE, as in little man tate !
