Sorry, my Lord
8,8 refers to the number of letters in the words of the answer, not the length of the tunnel.

Indeed, m'lord, the crafty Japanese have a tunnel connecting Honshu to Hokkaido measuring 33.46 miles, known as Seikan.
Alas this does not correlate to the number of letters indicated.
Hmmm,,tricky question.

No doubt this is the critical question in the quiz.
Is there a much longer tunnel under the Atlantic (8 letters!) to carry cables or something?

Probably just a coincidence but I have been given a quiz which mentions the longest rail tunnel in the world. There are 2 answers required, 6 letters and 8 letters, which are islands. Busby gives the answers above.

i've found articles to say that the Delaware Aqueduct (right number of letters) is still the longest - 136km - but Wiki says Thirlmere (too many letters)

I actually think that it's neither and it's going to be something else - there's the west-east pipeline in China, - 8074 km, the Enbridge Pipleine 2840............blood vessels (are they 'tunnels') are 1000s of miles if laid out........................
