Yikes! A bumper crop of great clues. How difficult it is to choose a winner; there are so many especially nice touches. There’s therogue @2 with “one’s given up” and “after race”, fieryjack @7 trying to charm God’s gift, BigBad’s ritual slaughter courtesy of Mafia @8, Mayan chief incurring mutilation @9, and use of bishop sacrifice @26, the nut ixion’s hew man’s sac @10 and excellent wordplay @14, trevor’s use of orifice @11, syzygy’s virgins in a volcano @13, paul’s brilliant (!) Incan descent @15, Les40’s cannon fodder @16, ginge’s personnel dispatch (lovely) @29…. Well, you can read them all of course, but I felt compelled to ooh and aah a bit. I’m giving the edge to kiwikid @22 for the nifty substitution device:

Homo sapiens’ stratagem taken to new levels when credit replaces real time offering (5,9)

Here’s your prize, kiwikid- a computer-generated reconstruction of Tenochtitlan (a place for Aztec descent, paul- they threw their literally heartless victims down the pyramids):

Thanks to all for participating with such inspiration.
