Another go - I don't think you can use 'deface' for two letters.

First two leave, start from scratch? (11)

Thanks to all of you for the great clues (poor Mick Jagger)- an excellent subtractive anagram from ixion @6, a neat use of American Graffiti and Alcatraz (The Rock) from BBM2 @14, rambler's inspired "(st)art from scratch", et al...

I'm going with Les40 @17:

Picked out ancient art for ghostly preparation without helping to make an exhibition (11)

Very clever fodder manipulation. Here's your ghostly prize:

Congrats, les.

When we were on La Palma earlier this year, we took a mile detour (each way) on a walk to look at a petroglyph. It was just a couple of irregular circles scratched on a rock!

Hooray!

Cheers aristophanes, took me about two hours to get the wordplay in order to match the surface read correctly.
Love the clip, very awe inspiring, it did take me back to my Grand Canyon visit in '93 with all the enigmatic rock formations, very beautiful scenery.
I like the 'news paper' part at the end, do you reckon we could hijack a column on there?

Thanks again aristo, I'll root out a cracker for next week.

All the best, Les40
