Apologies for the long hiatus. The library subscription was allowed to lapse & wasn't renewed until I prodded HQ. Still waiting, though.

These two are courtesy of Aristophenes. Many thanks for providing the missing issues.

April puzzle:

May puzzle:

I found a blog you might find useful, & funny. March solution:

(The archive listing is on the right side of the page.)

Now we can rest easy regarding the mystery of that final "X".

I see I haven't been consistent with my titles on the forum, using both Harper's & Harpers.
The former is the correct name of the magazine, but because the apostrophe can be problematic in file names, in the future I will drop it.
If you are searching for earlier puzzles on this forum, please try both forms.

Cheers.

I thought the April one was easy but very clever and enjoyable. I just did the May one today and it took a bit more time, and as usual there are some corkers. Thanks for tracking down the March solution, Syzzie! We did have quite the discussion about it, and it's nice to see that El riders in Chicago shared our bewilderment.

Thanks to the two of you: too late to enter but I'm sure they're both fun! And looking forward to future ones thanks to Syzygy's determination to re-order!

Try as I may, I cannot find the solution to "For short" via any of the links provided: can s'one help out? And while you're at it (I'm optimistic), how to get to the solution to "Sixes & Sevens",too --- maybe I just didn't wait long enough at some point along the line. Thank you!

Cheers Syzzie,

Just finished 'Sixes and Sevens'

A couple of pieces of wordplay I just can't see yet but I'm sure I'll see them eventually or may ask for clarification (maybe Americanisms). Some really nice clues in this one.

Not looked at 'For Short' yet

@Aristo - almost thought you were in the April puzzle at 2D, but two letters short.

Yes, one of the better ones - lots of stars. The blogger did pan a few, even ones I liked, 50A & 3D, but that's her theme.

Still don't get the play for:
39A, (middle of canCELed)
10D gross = EARN ?
32D GOLD = it's indicated by

Perhaps your daughter still has the May issue. The official solution for April, with wordplay, is a few pages back from the puzzle.

32D just came clear.

Read it again, doofus.
"it's indicated by" OR. Overlooked the conjunction.

Re April: I think you're right about the wordplay, Syzzie. You need cel to get canceled, and gross is earn. The ones I had starred are 26a, 36a, 3d (love the definition), 8d, 27d, and 34d.

Re May: There are indeed a few American kinks, Les. My favorite (hint, hint) is seven-letter L. Although this puzzle was a bit harder than the last one, I didn't have as many stars. I liked 12a and seven-letter H too, but on the whole I thought the April clues were more inspired. Still a lot of fun.
