OK, let's try again. I got Jethro first. I changed his U to a O for ring. Then I changed ring's T to a P for head. Then I looked at my down answer and saw that the 3rd letter of head (L) should change to a B - which is impossible.

Change ring's T to an N.

Bradfords Crossword Solvers Dictionary & Bradfords Crossword Solvers Lists are a brilliant pair of books for crossword solving - paperbacks often on offer from "The Book People"

remember that the 4 letter start and 4 letter end of the clues to be entered are not necessarily real words - look at the CONF... LICT example

I'm off out now to play tennis for a couple of hours (i know, I know, it's freezing, but we soon get warm!) but I'll look in again later to see if you've finished livs!

Finding this very difficult - not complaining, it's how it should be. Araucaria at his best I reckon.

Couple of questions:
Are all intermediate words "real" words as in example (ie cone, lone, line & lice) - realise first and last 4 letter words don't have to be (ie conf & lict)?

Are there always just 4 "steps" as in example? ie each starting letter changed just once.

Any hints gratefully accepted!
Thanks in advance.

rh142: yes, all real; no, 9 & 25 obviously fewer steps!
Does anyone "get" 19d? I have ?L?A?S and am completely lost!
