This week's preamble certainly made up for last week's absence of one - it's possibly amongst the longest I've seen, and I prepared myself for a struggle.

The puzzle itself was much easier and less dependent on trial and error than most numericals. After solving an initial few stand-alone clues, there followed a lengthy stretch of mechanically completing most of the grid from existing answers. Only when the final few gaps remained was a bit more pencil-nibbling needed. The endgame was quite fun, though, and serves to validate the gridfill.

I prefer numericals to take longer than this did. Pity there's a three-month wait for the next one.

I agree unhelpful. I enjoyed this and the maths was not too difficult. I was initially confused by the (lack of) brackets in some clues. Can anyone explain how to highlight the last six cells? Thank you.

My grid being complete, I "did the replacements" but am flummoxed by the next bit ... "the sum of all the new grid's entries will be visible in both a row and a column"?? what sum? What entries?

Any help please?

What entries?? The entries in the grid. There are 22 numbers in the grid - add them up!

Adding the entries gives an amazing result! It also confirms which of the two possible answers for 1dn is correct. Still struggling with the hightlighting.....

yes, that's what i thought it meant, but mine don't seem to add up to anything shown in the grid! Think I'll go back and check all my answers but the "replacement bit" was exactly as in the preamble so ............. (Should they be adding uo to the central row/central column?)
I'll have another look at my clue answers and grid answers

unclued, the answer to 1dn doesn't depend on the adding up.

Unhelpful, my two answers to19Ac are 999 and 1017 giving possible grid entries of 1010 or 1019 for 1 Dn. Have I made a mistake? Still trying to figure out the highlighting.

No I agree with what you have. I remember reading on the AB thread that some peoples' totals were 9 too mnay so that would imply 1d in the grid is 1010.

Do the grid entries add to row 5/column 5?
