I am stuck on two:

1. 8d - Inventor of special craft: one that crew left? (9). C---E-E-L; and

2. 10a - Train without reason going off the rails (4). L---.

The third letter of each will be the same.

Any help gratefully received.

Cockerell is the inventor...Lean is the other one (learn without r for rails)

Many thanks, Nij.

Cockerell (inventor of the hovercraft) must be right, but I can't see why.

As for Lean, it doesn't fit with Cockerell as the third letters intersect - i.e. L_C_.

Almost there.
