But, you know, neither "kept urging forward" nor "urging forward" is the same as "on and on". I must be looking at it from the wrong angle...

So, a hundred adhered to on & on. Eh?

My experience of battle charges is not comprehensive, but perhaps only the most grammatically correct warrior would urge fellow combatants forward with the words "On and On", rather than "On! On!"?

OK, that works, I suppose. Urging forward=on! on!- with a bit of license. Don't see why kept is past tense- parenthetical past participle perhaps? Oh well, Conon won't mind.
