I think you were right all along. SHOT fits the clue well which nis more than you can say for WHET. Also, OCHO is a Japanese word. It means ending one era and starting another.

Having problems with:
9 across; clue is lower Jurasic: 4 letters -i-s
30 across; clue is not frosty: 4 letters o-e-

any ideas? Ta.
