After poisonous gas, look black and go red (6)

I get that the answer is colour but am not sure entirely why. "Poisonous gas" gives CO (for carbon monoxide), "look" could give LO but I'm struggling to fit the rest. I'm guessing that the definition part of the clue is "go red" and that "after" is just a position indicator so that leaves "black and go" to give UR. I can't make it happen...

Any thoughts?
