I was thinking of Poll being short for Polly (parrot) - perhaps my parsing is wrong ?

Polly is usually a parrot in crosswords.
It was actually Connie Booth who played Polly in Fawlty Towers. We got there in the end though.

Yes, her father was Tony Booth the actor (Alf Garnett's son in law). That doesn't explain the Poll bit though.

I think poll is just a contraction of polly (the parrot).
