Thanks again to les, and to AB for providing the very clear explanation. I had got everything right (with a little kind prompting from les), but the wordplay on some baffled me - UTERI for instance!
Favourtite remains GNOMIC.

Thank you Les and thanks to all for participating -- i did not complete this one at all-- and this morning ---i printed off answers and explanations-- and sat and groaned.

Its interesting that you found my UTERI a bit puzzling. Not having one I cant empathise very well. Actually Les warned me that the wordplay was """"DEFICIENT"""" or sommat like that BUT
I thought the wordplay was one of my best and quite TIGHT!!!!!!
Drop me a post a put me out of my misery.

No, it made perfect sense once explained - but I never would have worked it out without the explanation (apart from the definition part, which gave me the solution)
