Not so difficult this time, I thought. The "read the signs" theme was a bit of a let-down - not cryptic, and all Googleable.

Agreed, peterm. Just started and almost finished. I don't think the clues were as clever as the last puzzle's were. Still fun though.

Syzzie: Re 19d, "wheels" is slang for car.

My apologies if I led anyone astray at post #5, but it seems most have finished with no problem.
Les & Aristo set me straight on 19D.
Les was correct about "names of signs".

Excuse: Too little fill at that point & too much pain (back problem) to think clearly, e.g.:

20A got me on the wrong tangent. Here's what happened:
Had P?L?ROW leading to PALTROW (Gwyneth ?).
The "T" fit with what I expected for 8D QUINT???

"Read the signs". So I did & applied my massive brain power to arrive at this.
ΒΆ looks like a backward "P" with a bar, ergo:
P + ALT (reversal) + ROW (line)

"What? Ya gotta problem with dat?"
I certainly did, trying to relate the other clues to someone similar.

Sign references: Ch = Cambers, NOAD & CX = NA & CA Oxfords
W = Wikipedia, (W-R) = redirect, (W-S) = separate entry

1A NOAD, W-R
20A Ch, W
22A none, W (smaller than a Bullet) U+00B7 vs U+2022 (Unicode)
37A none, W
51A Ch ? (weird math def.), W-S
8D all, W-S
26D none, W-R
36D all, Ch, W (Ch does not show that symbol)

Minor quibbles:
Unchecked "C" at 20A & 8D cross.
"Read the signs". What does that mean?

Also, Wendy has participated before, & welcome back.

I'll post an unofficial solution in a few days, to give everyone a shot.

Poor Syzzie- looking for legerdemain where there isn't any. I suppose there's something to be said for not reading directions. Sorry, missed Les's earlier post re wheels.
Les: Lucky you, not having had the scarlet "grade" branded on your psyche; every impressionable young student has to read this over here- part of the American Canon. Actually, it may be verboten now. Must find out.

Am managing the normal clues but so far completely stumped on "read the signs". Maybe something will occur when I've done some more

Evening Rosalind,

Just got in and spotted your post.

the French word is 38Down. However, 37Across is the name for French quotation marks.
hope that helps
