Thanks Rossim I maybe shouldn't admit this but I haven't heard the word anagrind before -just looked it up - this may explain why I am so poor at cryptic crosswords, my lack of vocabulary. I am though still determined to improve and help is always appreciated.

anagrind is a relatively new term, as far as i know.
personally, i think it is a clumsy and very ugly word.

I agree, so lets just call them anagram indicators! Understanding what they are is more important than the actual name. They come in lots of different disguises too!
