Thanks for lento everyone - this now gives for 10a Burglar's top man brought back loot-good-o! (6) BE??E? The extra letter in the defn part is O presumably in loot-good-o
Any ideas anyone please?

Whilst 'lentos' is reasonably plausible for 8d, the answer is in fact 'rondos' and 10ac is 'behoof' (why I don't know!). Have finished the grid and highlighted appropriately. A very satisfying PDM and all became clear.

7d is 'eorls' - look up earls in chambers.
30d is 'clean' (unarmed).
"... a world empty of people, just uninterrupted grass, and a hare sitting up"
(i) the earth (empty of people 'homo')
(ii) quite tricky but appropriate
(iii) wordsearch the grid for a 7 letter hare

Thanks haggis - i had eorls pencilled in, but still don't see the defn!
I have all the highlighting now, just got the perimeter to work on! (however I seem to have 13 unchecked letters not 14 as suggested by as waste emerges??)

Have only just picked up on your thread after racking my brains for hours to help a friend on this one! Only need one little tip: is the 7-letter hare in the grid (i) a nationality and (ii) not to be found in a straight line of any kind but all letters in the top 2 lines? Otherwise I must have s'thing wrong & (I hope) that's unlikely, as everything else has worked out now!
