"Says Phillip, says he," as Joel Chandler Harris would have said.

I see what you're saying Phillip, pick up / sounds like, as the homophone. But is Beowulf an ancient manuscript poem from viking history, would that make 'Book' a bit tenuous.
I'm only playing Devils advocate here, not trying to offend.

it was a book at my school. it doesn't matter when something was written or in what language. it can still be a book. like the illiad for instance.

That was my original question Mamya "Can Flower mean Pick"
If so, then that knocks out Phillip's explanation, I just haven't seen Pick meaning Flower before.

Has anyone got a definitive dictionary explanation because I ain't got my Chambers handy (or another dictionary)?

mamya's explanation is very clear and obviously the right one. mine is equally obviously a load of bollocks. sorry about that.

The crux of this is.

Is the explanation

Pick book = flower B around R for Romulus - going up = BreRwolf. = Remus character

Or

The book 'Beowulf' (pick up/ sounds like) Berwolf around R for Romulus = Bre(R) wolf = Remus character
