I know. Here's a message from the Wampanoags and Narragansetts: "Thanks for the booze and blankets, and sorry to hear that you lost the land too."

Feeling dense. Is "bird" the Americanism? Do you say "have a bird" for "throw a fit", or "flip (or give) the bird" for "give the finger"?

1- BRINGS UP THE REAR
4- GOOSE-STEPS

Well done Ari. Spot-on for 1, 4, 5. No to the "Americanisms". It's simply a word used in N America (according to the accepted distionaries). Personally, I would not restrict the word.

Good! You haven't driven him off, Phillip.

Tried to find something beginning with ACE for 4, but could only think of acetic (and didn't think tic worked for minute- though you may have vinegary jams for all I know). :)

Hi Rambler. Thanks for taking part. Yes Phillip, it's DOVE. Well done!

No. 3 is quite a difficult one to work out without a few letters (later). Don't think of 'jam' as the sweet sticky stuff. Methinks I'll leave it till 1730, then put in a few letters and THEN retire to my 7-course din-din.
