I've no longer got the paper, but I think 1 Down might have been 'badged', changed to 'cadged' - the 'b' was needed to form the theme word.

Thanks chips. The B is needed to form the theme word. I've worked it out, along with the four word phrase and one of the hidden words, but I can't see where the other one is. Any idea which quadrant it is in?

pink in the bottom right, yellow in the bottom left ( think about your cake!)

I have a clash on 5 down, and am missing one of the letters that are meant to be discarded. Which clues have clashes in them? I have 1a,1d,22d,24a,27d,38a,13a,13a. What are the others?

the 10 clashes are
1a 1st & 3rd letters - discard the 2 Bs
11a 1st letter - discard the T
13a 3rd & 4th letters - discard the N & T
24a last letter - discard the E
33a 1st & 3rd letters - discard the G & R
38a 1st & 2nd letters - discard the E & A
