Got the theme word. A - of -, indeed. Next question: what's all this about embellishing the grid's cells? I think I'll leave the Listener alone, in future.

Still in the dark: I can find "yellow" in there...am I getting warm, or colder?

I am only a third of the way through this crossword but I think I might have an idea as to what the theme might be. But some help is desperately needed on a few clues:

5a: With cap back to front, Farington, say, is a boring thing (7)

24a: Handle (Edmund's) duck in Home Counties?(6)

37a: Old English striker to try gaining entry to series(7)

Martin - you are almost there. Think of the 10 letter word (which I assume you have, it's a ? of ?),and how 'yellow' relates to it, then the other (smaller) word should spring to mind. After that, it's simply a matter of swapping your pen for some other writing implements!

for 5a I have Terebra, which is an ovipositor I think

The second one might have been Steale.
