You are probably right, Tonyw, but, if you are, I for one don't think it is a very good clue!

As for Spaniel- please don't take offence. An unwritten rule of this site is that you always give the full clue, including the number of letters, and any letters you already have.

Hi tornface - thanks for that - as you can see, I am back. The solution does seem convoluted but it sorts of makes sense. I didn't realise that of course people would be helping who hadn't seen the crossword and that the clue was needed!
