Am I being extra thick today? (don't answer that one!) but Brackendale, why would I know Tinkerbell very well? I bet it's obvious, but it's bad Sunday today ;)

No particular reason and nothing sinister! We were all young once and we all read Peter Pan so we all know Tinker Bell.

The clue was nice in a gentle sort of way (as befits the answer) - fiddle is TINKER and ring is BELL

Anyone who doesn't remember Tinker Bell mustn't have had a childhood.

Ah yes! Lovely memories.
btw I am still stuck on 10d. for which the first ridiculous answer I had was Wafer thin but now the second word ends in a, so back to square one. I really should I call it a day and re-start tomorrow?

Yes it is WATER FLEA (not as nice as Tinker Bell in my book!)

"To the ear" it sounds like WAR TO FLEE which is fighting to escape.
