Thank you for the suggestions,greedy kite and tonyw. I have the feeling one of your suggestions is correct but a bit of research is necessary to decide which one - and it's a bit late to start that now. So I will start my research tomorrow morning when I am brighter eyed and bushier tailed than I am right now!

Looks like I only have to look up Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos in the morning. I think it is right - I had been trying to work out why the three words in the clue had capital letters so three names fits that.

I have certainly learned a bit this morning thanks to Wikipedia's entry for The Three Fates - yesterday I hadn't even heard of them! Now I know a bit about them, I see that they fit the clue perfectly so the crossword is now complete. Thanks again, tonyw, for helping to broaden my education - I would never have got there without your help on that one.
