CM:in Bradfords (if you have it) for courtyard you will find a word with "m". I very much sympathize with you: I was in the same plight!

Thanks, greedy kite. I may need to invest in a new dictionary.

Looking back over the last year, to be quite honest I would have got nowhere without Chambers,Bradford,Brewers,Oxford Quotations, and of course Google! It's not such an inexpensive hobby when you begin to take it seriously!

I finished this on Sunday, but still have question marks next to two of the clues. I'm sure I'll kick myself when they're explained to me.
11a: File freeing prisoner (not a whopper) (4) Something you remove, say, a lie from to get rasp?
2d: Japanese noodle- cook stuffs one (4) I assume there's either a chef's name or a word for cook that has udon in it.

2dn: do (cook) ins. un (one)

I can't see the wordplay in 11ac. Oner can mean lie (whopper), which is the last half of prisoner, but I can't get any further than that. R as P could also be part of it, but I don't see that either.

I also can't see the wordplay for 6dn. Any offers?

And thanks for the explanation. I see that you haven't turned in your clues yet (to Les40). You're usually not THAT shadowy!

Thanks aristo & SB. I too was reading it as AL!

aristo - you'll be relieved to know that 3 of my 4 clues for Les40 are now done. I'm still agonising over the 4th.
