I think this has been overcomplicated.

place = put.
kick = punt
with end of conversion (n) missed = put.

all the place/conversion stuff is there for distraction. a punt (kick)is when you drop the ball and kick it BEFORE it hits the ground. a drop kick is "kicked" as it hits the ground, for a place kick the ball is "placed" on the spot before being struck.
