13a Get rid of old lover --- no sign of love, romance gone by --- EGEST
18a Mum about to engage senior partner in firm, say? --- SHAREHOLDER

I had BUSK for the first one - it fits 'improvise'/prepare and 'play for money'.
I had the same as you for the other day - am not good at explaining the reasoning!

Thanks for the correction,Chips;still not completely happy about the other two ---though "older"="senior" has at last hit me!

Could the "sh a" be as in to tell to keep mum and the H be from hard (as firm)?

Will try re EGEST
Old lover = Ex
No sign of love = remove the X
Old romance = gest (an old word for romance)
Egest -discharge,remove etc.

To expand on post 4 could it be SH A (as in tell to keep mum) RE (about) H (hard) (engaging "firm")+OLDER- senior- giving SHAREHOLDER - partner?
