Don't know what it's like in the UK, but over here (in the US) Joyce is the virtual CEO of a vast academic industry- writing paychecks from the grave for an army of professors.

it's all a bit vague to me now aristo. but I remember a lot of eng lit as a variation on the emperors new clothes. you just had to pretend that it worked on so many levels,was really a thinly veiled attack on etc etc etc. when really it bored the shit out of you.

Ain't it the truth. Everybody here has to read Joyce but even lit majors don't know who Trollope is. I'm still a voracious reader, but I went underwent a sort of catharsis when I shot The Canon.

"went underwent"- an expression from Finnegans Wake? I think that's where he refers to my state as "masses of shoe sets".
