when you want italics to start type "". when you want them to end type "". don't type the inverted commas.

left square bracket + i + right square bracket at beginning of bit you want in italics.

left square bracket + forward slash (that thing below ?) + i + right square bracket at end of bit you want in italics.

I don't have open- and close-quotation marks on my keyboard. I tried this and it doesn't work.

you don't need quotation marks ( that's these things.. " " , yes). you want square brackets [ [ ] ] (these things) put i inside a left and right pair when you want italics to start. do the same at the end but prefix the i with a slash.. /

I think you have to put the relevant letter inside square brackets at each end of the passage (I hope)
