5 clues need to have "thousand" "island" added to the wordplay-
e.g 33d wordplay so far only gives ON (round noon) Put M(thousand) at the front and KEY(an island) at the end ....this gives MONKEY which is the defn anger.
Not sure of all 5 even though my grid is full but 36d and 12a also follow this rule.
You need synonyms for thousand & island added to 5 clues basically

Rosie - you want combinations of letters and/or words that could be read as 1ac. When added to the cryptic bit of the clue, they will give the word to be entered in the grid. All the definitions are already there. I found it easiest to work backwards from the definition.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

sudokolover has gone into it in a bit more detail. I make the 5 specials 12ac, 17ac, 41ac, 33dn and 36dn.

Thanks Sudoku lover & peterm for very clear explanations. I just couldn't see it even though (somehow) I had filled the grid.

Rosie - like you, I got all the answers and got the grid filled before I started thinking about the second half of the preamble!

Interesting one today. All done, but can't account for all of 41A.

SULK stupidly, wanting (S)econds, clutching soft (P)

= [key] LKPU , leaving NCH ?

Any explanation?
