I maybe summarised too much - the preamble to this actually said 'Extra letters created by wordplay in...the clues provide a variant of a quotation.' I've not done enough of this puzzle yet to know exactly what this means.

Thank you. I see I think. veal is included in the answer according to the wordplay but the E is dropped when entering the answer in the puzzle , i.e val is now used. The extra letter is not in the clue as printed otherwise you would have to read it as met (not meat) and it wouldn't lead to the answer.

Am battling on, some of this is making sense now.

The extra letter created here is 's' but I don't know where it comes from as I'm finding this clue empenetrable.Any thoughts/ideas are very welcome.

Had a bad typo in my last post - it should have said 'boggy place'. I think I've solved that one now anyway, I came up with 'slavic'.
