President Hu (of China) + isnt gives "shut in", to pen.

Thanks,AB - I'd put 'shut in' as I could see 'isnt' had been jumbled. I was left with Hu - and decided there must be a president somewhere with that name!

I've got only two small, very troublesome clues left - would appreciate some help.
4 D. Sound of any power plant (3) ?e?
16 A. Had to tear out weed (4) ??i?
('drip'/weed is an option, with 'rip' being 'tear out', but I don't see how it fits the rest of the clue.
The last letter in 4 D is also the last letter of 16 Across.

The commomn letter is P

Sorry, hadn't read your question properly! Any sounds like NE=P(power)
D is abbreviation for had=rip(tear)

These are MY answers, not necessarily the correct ones.
40 A. Pelter (=bombardment, has LT/lieutenant inside Peer/lord).
25 A. Goldbugs - I think it was the only thing that fitted, and 'goldbug' is an investor.
22. I went with 'swagmen', couldn't come up with anything else for the letters I had.
