You may well be right here,but my reasoning was based on picking the vulgar wordplay,in view of the mag. involved.

It may be me -- I do have an antipathy towards those clues which use 'a bit of' or 'mostly' or somesuch to reduce the word by an indeterminate number of letters. I imagine it's probably an Araucarian invention, but it's opened the door to many lesser and lazier setters.
