Peterm, until you mentioned it, I hadn't given too much thought to 24 Across - was just glad when I got the answer. Like you, I don't see where 'thrice' comes in.

I took it that 2 x 3 letters were 'sheared'
from immACULate and added to CAR (Carolus/Charles)

As usual stuck on the last clue. VO_L_R_ meaning dancers so I suppose the last letter is S.
I wonder if I have got 31 down wrong, my answer is very obscure.
