27 across, LA_A_A is giving me trouble. Is it Lateran, a Roman see and my second A is wrong?

Your letters are right, but it's not lateran. The definition is "purchasing system" and you should read "indeed" as "in deed".

am in exactly the same position as Cornflake,it's my last one,and despite scouring the web I find no word that fits with that definition (I must have missed something).Could someone give us the 3rd letter,perhaps,or would that be too much?Don't feel like racking my brains even longer : we have over 30 degrees Celsius here!Thank you so much in adv ance.

OK,got it now,thanks to a different machine:tools are everything,it seems!Must say I've never heard it,tho' it's so easy.And now for ANOTHER long drink...Cheers!

Well done Chips. 41ac is a bit odd, because it doesn't come up in Chambers Word Wizard but it's actually in Chambers.

Peterm - thanks. For 41 Across, I just worked my way through Chambers -am glad the word began with the letter that it did!
