I thought oil tank for number 5, only because a tank is a vehicle! That's about it!

Hello all! Just got home. Gosh, quite a few contributors today. Glad you're having a go. Ixion, you got 4/5 with a tiny slip on no. 1 which Lloyd corrected. Well done peterm and to all who tried - thank you. Tony is absent today so I'll do a brief explanation.

2. Long-standing = OLD; condition = NICK (as in he's in good nick). and The Adversary = the devil = OLD NICK. {type of clue. charade)

3. SALVO = a burst. Anag(unfolds) of gapasruralmovie (minus - leaves) upmarriage. (complex anagram)

4. STANDING = station. deputy = stand-in; dog's last = g. (charade)

5. THE STYX. {articulated}"sounds like" 'the sticke' = rural areas (homophone)
The Styx carries the dead i.e shady carrier with liquid thrown in plus a "?".

Hi Jolan, I got number one correct. I think my answer to 5. is right, Oil Tank. Doesn't make sense at all but as close as I could get. Enjoy your tea.
