OMG, please tell me this is just a Canadian paper's crossword so that I'm never tempted to even try to do it!!

Well done Quix, and thank you for the explanations. Did get mop, but had the wrong Hawaiian singer (Iz), and "write to wright" just passed me by.

well, it is in one of our national newspapers, (saturday edition), but I'm not sure if it is entirely Canadian.
The spelling is always the Queen's English, not American. ( colour not color).
It could very well originate in the UK.
