Special instructions: Each clue is a passage from which the printer has removed a hidden answer, closing the gap and sometimes taking liberties with the punctuation, but not disturbing the order of the remaining letters. Example: Vaulting above tunnel entrance appears inane, scary. Answer: PESTO. Undevilled version: Vaulting above tunnel entrance appears in an escape story.

You're right -- I shouldn't be looking for something that's not there!

Not easy this week. I've done it, but have got a couple of loose ends.

27ac: there are only 2 unchecked letters, so I'm pretty sure I've got the right answer, but I can't see where it can be inserted in the clue.

2dn: as far as I can see, there are 2 plausible answers. The unchecked letter can be a W (which is what I've gone for) or a R. Both would make sense.

Anyone got any ideas?

Go with the "w" and use it as the first letter of "we"

Thanks, but I'm more troubled by 27ac. I still can't see where it slots into the clue.
