What Chambers?
Chambers on-line dictionary and word wizard doesn't,nor does 10th edition.

morning all . I have Chambers 20th century dictionary here (new edition 1972)it shows
Aardwolf (S.Afr) aardwoolf: the earth-wolf, a hyena-like South African carnivore

andelia,I have the old edition too.
What I think you are looking at is the italicised pronunciation of the word.The 2 o's are topped by __ meaning it sounds like woo.

Welcome home, The Joker. You were sadly missed.

Where were you on holiday? They say Bellshill is nice at this time of year. Perhaps you went somewhere more exotic, like Cleland, the birthplace of Sydney Devine, no less.

Yesterday was a woefully quiet day on the forum. This particular thread was the one that kept us going throughout the day. At an early posting, I suggested it might be an anagram, but couldn't get to the actual word.

Anyway, good to have you back.

Thank you for your welcome home Pipesmoker. I can understand you thinking that I was soaking up the pleasures of Lanarkshire(Buckie et al),and my absence from the forum due to a lack of internet access,indeed of electricity in these parts!
Sorry to disappoint,but I was slumming it in Madeira,brushing up my Portugese.
Thought your "aardwoolf"was inspired solving,as per usual.
