Can anybody explain why they give dictionaries (or pens)as prizes for crossword competitions? Won't most solvers have a good dictionary, and a pen,one would hope, already? This has always mystified me.

Martin,
Probably the same reason as giving a watch to someone when they retire and no longer have to be places at specific times.

Although I have received many dictionaries and reference books, I'm still v keen to win the super pen in the Sunday Times prize crossword - I've been entering for years/decades. My children have pointed out that I could have bought the pen with what I've spent on postage.I did get the Telegraph fountain pen, but that was definitely second best!
