I've finished it but can someone explain to a yank why 24A clue includes the word stop,as I can't find a London station with that name.

RE - 7 down

N-E(TT-LIN)G definition is STINGY as in Stingy Nettle.
N = 'Knight' (in chess notation)
EG = 'Perhaps' as in For example.
Then 'loading up' indicates 'holding/containing' in an upwards direction:
NIL = 'Nothing' with
TT = Teetotal = 'On the wagon'.
