Can anyone explain the wordplay to 8D?

Totally flummoxed by the theme.
OK, they all start with A. So?

I'll make a guess. The unclued words appear at the top corners of pages.

I "think" they are abbreviations - look under Chambers page 1 - "A" (3rd defn) for the across clues and "a" (3rd defn) for the down clues. All the relavnt words are there so That's what I thought!

8d cryptic part - in the 1970's there was a pop song "underground, overground wombling free, the wombles of Wimbledon common are we..." . The Wombles was a childrens tv prog about some furry animals that cleaned up Wimbledon Common - this was their theme tune.

Thanks sudokulover.

The forum disappeared again, like last week.

Re The Wombles, had never heard of them.
At first, did have the crazy idea that I could somehow anagram Wimbledon out of that clue. Strange, but I do get these psychic (?) indications now & then.

Unfortunately, don't have a Chambers, so I'm out of luck. Have reasonable words, but can't verify.

BTW, the Chambers site was down all day (12th).
