Thanks, sudokulover, for the explanations.
Think I understand now.

Jol is new to me, as used.
Was looking for a SA political party! ;-D
Only knew it as Yule, from a Scandinavian cookie tin.

Medieval roman numerals. Those were used in Spec 2000, SW corner, by Lavatch. Just retrieved it from the recycle bin; tossed it this evening. Will enter those in my database.

Envoy - found the other definition:
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/envoy

Encore, merci.

If I can trouble you for one more.

23D "getting snuff out". Is this a British expression?

Maybe I'm being dense. Even though I had the answer, was blind to the enclosure. Just saw "owe", & the rest was crossed.

Hello Zardoz. There is no Brit expression "getting snuff out". The expression is simply "snuff out", as in to extinguish a candle, also used for "to kill", or "go west" (which may well be a Brit expression.
