I was also thinking of that colloquial word "lairy" for lair. What do !'s mean when you see them in clues usually?

Not position or disgust.

Hints:
23a is a sort of anagram
21d is straightforward and should help you to get 21a
If you can get 17d it should open up the whole bottom-left.

hmm into the wild?

It must relate to 'fighter' as that word hasn't had much use in the answer

Not really a good clue - try into the blue (as in blue corner). Should assist the bottom right corner.

So I have the answers in front of me today..

I got about 2/5 done for so I'm pretty/very happy with that, although I did mull over it for a long time and completed no work.

21d - Sober, i don't understand.
16d - Purchase, the 'firm grip' part of it refers to a form of the word i was unfamiliar with I think??

Anyway i'm still trying on the same crossword haven't checked the other half's answers yet.

Sir Garfield Sobers was a famous cricketer.
A good grip on something is also referred to as having a good purchase.
Good luck with the next one !
