Yes apache (pronounced apash) is a hooligan - my attempt at a hint referred to apache (apash) dancers. See:

Wendy - just to add to Setanta's reply - Chambers gives the pronunciation of the French use of the word as having only two syllables - 'a-pash'.

Any hints please for 16 across. It's the only one we haven't got. We have C?E?O?E.

Well many thanks to both of you! Mr. Chamber agrees with Mr. Collins! We have an Oxford French Dictionary too which translates apache as hooligan.

We had fun looking up 16 across just to see if it could really be a word - and were delighted to find it was!

What a lovely puzzle. I knew he was in his eighties but didn't realise that he'll actually be 90 this coming week!!!

The "runner" in question is an ex-runner, now a Lord and very involved with London Olympics ;-)

CMK - Sebastian was the famous runner

(I'd never heard of the word either!)

Good luck!

To JS & Wendy - aah, yes. Penny dropped and a quick check of Chambers confirmed all. As I no longer live in England, the said person is not really uppermost in my thoughts. Sad but true.

Belated thanks to OHCelt, too. You must have posted as I was still slowly typing, and we crossed.
