All coins and hats found! Overall - not impressed with this puzzle! Preferred the Xmas Spectator & Guardian.
Now back to Mephisto!

I have 23a as "ramiwingllies", but this doesn't fit with 17d, which I have as "tstateropi". Where have I gone wrong? In addition, I can't find a "v", as required by "analyse pavan to a toad", in my unchecked letters...or anywhere else, for that matter. Finally, what is the significnace of the reference to 34 & 17 in the instructions? Any offers?

You made the same mistake as me Martin - 17d should be T stiver OPI which will then give you RAMI wing LLIES. (wing and stiver being the coins)

Sorry haven't worked out the "34 &17" bit yet?

Thank you SDL. I don't think I'd ever have got that - I've never come across "stiver", and I hope I shan't again. I assumed that the coin was that old favourite "stater", which turned out to be truly a "faux ami". I still can't work out what he's on about with 34 & 17.

I'm stuck on 30dn & 34dn. Can anyone give me a nudge? Looks like 30dn might be odin, but I can't see why.
