Thanks DJ, I'd picked up the O factor from post 22- but even changing the E to O hasn't improved matters.
I haven't got the crossword with me at the moment, but the Yorkshire connection of the solution has eluded me, assuming the tree to be oak (no big spoiler I guess). Time to give up...
