I was once "repatriated" by the AA (with several Venture Scouts) when the Land Rover chassis broke in Switzerland. We were insured, luckily, and they gave us the alternative of sleeper train all the way back, or train to Zurich and flight (it cost them about the same). We chose the flight - great train journey, then the magic escalators at Zurich airport - you could take trolleys up and down them ( a novelty in the 80s).
The tedious bit was waiting for the Land Rover and our heavy luggage to be ferried back - that took over a month, as I remember.

No insurance i'm afraid chrise --- hubby forgot to add European breakdown coverage when we renewed ---- ooops. Journey should be ok ---here to Paris - London (Eurostar) London -home = bout 10 hrs if all goes well
