Perhaps in the last few minutes before the deadline, jolan might at least point out the definitions for the ones that no-one seems to have solved......?
Correct as far as I am concerned, GK - as I implied, the clues are so well constructed that the definition parts are (very!) far from obvious - to me, at least.
OK my paltry efforts today:
3 SEA LAVENDER - a sea-shore plant I can tell a story about; SEAL A VENDER (sounds like or nearly is VENDOR)
4 SCARED (subtractive anagram)
btw the story - an English plantswoman called Ellen Wilmott: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Willmott
developed a cultivar of Sea Lavender that she was very impressed by. When she visited other people's gardens, she always took an opportunity to drop a few seeds. The plants would germinate and the form became known as "Mrs Wilmott's Ghost", as its presence showed her passing.
