Re 22/22 Can't work it out completely, but I think 'acid' does not refer to one normally found in a school lab! which kind of fits n'est-ce pas?

ixion - for 9ac, the outer letters of five and 30dn give you the answer.

9A - discontentedly is a pun - apply it to five and the answer to 30

In 22, I suppose it's simply when the initial letters of "litmus paper" replaced "acid".

I've nearly finished and have the theme etc, but the couple of hints above to 9 across have now thrown me completely. Am I just being a bit dense? I currently have (for 9 ac) ??o?s - is that wrong?
